Legato is a playing technique where notes are connected smoothly, with no gaps between them. In MIDI or synthesis, this often means that notes slightly overlap, which can trigger specific behavior—such as smooth transitions between notes (especially in synths or virtual instruments with portamento or legato sampling). Legato playing adds fluidity, expression, and realism to melodic lines.
