Modes are variations of scales derived from the major scale (or others), each with its own distinct mood and color. There are 7 main modes based on the major scale: Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian And Locrian. Modes are widely used in classical music, jazz, funk, rock, and world music to expand harmonic possibilities and create unique melodic flavors.
