Decibels [dB]
« Back to Glossary Index
Decibels (dB) are a unit of measurement used to quantify sound level or audio signal intensity. It’s a logarithmic scale, meaning an increase of about 6 dB roughly doubles the perceived loudness. In music production, decibels are used to measure volume levels (dBFS in digital, dBu or dBV in analog) to avoid distortion or clipping and to balance elements within a mix.
